Valentine's Day

Valentines Day in Suisun Valley

Valentine's Day in Suisun Valley

After accepting an invitation from some wonderful friends, my wife and I spent Valentine’s Day in that famous valley over the hill. That day was a reminder of how fortunate I am to work in such a beautiful environment, even in the middle of winter. After a tasty lunch at one of our favorite restaurants, we visited a couple of wineries, one being a popular champagne house on Silverado Trail. I took the vineyard photos on Suisun Valley Road just before finishing off the afternoon at Wooden Valley, where we enjoyed a barrel tasting of the 2010 Petite Sirah paired with dark chocolate. Thanks Jim and Nan for helping me look good on Valentine’s Day; my wife had a wonderful time!

Ron Lanza with guests of Passport Sunday

Passport Sunday Glass

Passport Sunday Food

Passport Sunday guests

I can’t decide who enjoyed this year’s Passport Sunday more, guests of the event or Suisun Valley’s winemakers. I have to think that both groups had a great time. It was definitely a special day at Wooden Valley partly because this year I was able to share the experience with my son Todd. We both spent the day sharing barrel samples of two different Cabenets grown in very different soils. One Cabernet grows in well-drained rocky hillside soil and the other grows in soil of the deep valley floor. The curiosity and interest of the visitors who stopped by our barrel station was overwhelming to both Todd and me. Along with sharing some wine from our cellar, we also had Ahi’s Seafood and Chop House who provided a wonderful spread of food and music by Silverback who, as always, entertained us with their smooth sounds. From beginning to end, the day was incredible! I can only hope that last Sunday was as much fun for everyone who attended as it was for me.

Fratellanza Club Sign

Fratellanza Club Polenta & Rabbit Feed

Rick & Ken Lanza at the Fratellanza Club

Ron Lanza at the Fratellanza Club

On Tuesday evening my brothers and I were invited to an authentic Italian “Polenta and Rabbit” feed at the Fratellanza Club of Oakland. The Fratellanza Club is one of many Italian clubs in the bay area established in the 1920’s and 1930’s as a community support organization for Italian immigrants. The dinner I attended was a stag night and only happens once a year. Although the rabbit was incredible, I’m sure my wife didn’t feel she was missing anything. It was a pleasure to spend an evening surrounded by great people and traditions I remember as a child. I hope that the Italian clubs continue so future generations can experience what I did last night.

Autumn Food & Wine Event

Autumn Food & Wine Event 2

This coming Saturday morning I’ll be driving to Lake Tahoe along with other Suisun Valley vintners to showcase Suisun Valley wines at the Autumn Food & Wine Festival’s 25th Annual Celebration. The event is held at Northstar at Tahoe which, I believe, is an excellent venue for showcasing food and wine. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to expose our wines to locals in the Tahoe-Reno area along with scores of wine lovers living within an hour’s drive of Suisun Valley. This is our second year attending this event that boasts three full days of food, wine and festivals. Last year I was able to stay the entire weekend, take it all in and have a great time. However, this year I’ll be driving home Saturday evening to attend the Advocates for the Art’s “Evening in the Valley” event hosted annually at Wooden Valley Winery. Needless to say it’s going to be a busy but fun weekend for me. In this photo Gary Falati, my good friend, is helping us pour at last year’s event. If you’re in the Truckee area on Saturday stop by and taste some fantastic wines…..hope to see you there!!

BBQ & Blends guests enjoying lunch in Wooden Valley's picnic area

BBQ & Blends Event Participants blending their own wine

I enjoy all Wooden Valley events; however, I have to say that BBQ & Blends is my favorite.  We had our first BBQ & Blends event in 2005 and it became very apparent to me, that this was a great opportunity to spend some one on one time with guests and give them a firsthand look at how we make wine at Wooden Valley. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this event here’s how it works. Once a year we invite wine club members to join us along with their friends and family for a BBQ lunch in our picnic grounds followed by a blending session in the barrel room.  My brother Rick, our winemaker, and I eat lunch with a small group of no more than 40 people after which we accompany them to the barrel room. Once there we give a small lesson on winemaking, discuss the wines they’ll be pulling from barrels for blending and the fun begins. Guests are then given a bottle and all the tools they need to create their own personal blend. During the blending, Rick and I make ourselves available for any questions that event goers may have. I really enjoy watching this process through the eyes of our guests and it gives me the opportunity to share a little bit of the excitement I feel throughout the winemaking process. Hope to see you at next year’s BBQ & Blends so we can talk wine. Salute’
